In 2017, Finland celebrates 100 Years of Independence.

Located between Sweden on its western border and Russia to the East, Finland was ruled first by Sweden’s kings from 1150 to 1809, and then by Russia’s czars from 1809. On December 6, 1917 after Russia was plunged into its Bolshevik Revolution, Finland declared itself an independent nation. 2017 is the 100th year of independence and celebrations are taking place all year long in Finland and around the world.

Tuesday, October 17, 2017, 7:30 p.m.

Nordia House

8800 SW Oleson Rd., Portland, OR 97223

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence, two Finnish musicians, cellist Jussi Makkonen and pianist Nazig Azezian, will perform an all-Sibelius concert, Sibelius Inspiration, from 7:30-9:30pm on Tuesday, October 17 at Nordia House, 8800 SW Oleson Road, Portland, Oregon.

“Sibelius drew inspiration from the heroic tales of the national epic poem, Kalevala, and from Finland’s beautiful landscapes – especially the forests and lakes of Karelia,” explained Azezian. “Our aim is for the music, videos and stories to transport the audience to a far-away world of beauty, myth and romance.”

The Sibelius Inspiration live concert will also include narration and videos of the musicians performing in costumes and scenes depicting the places that inspired Sibelius. The videos were filmed in Karelia, in Eastern Finland.

Tickets are available at https://www.scanheritage.org/upcoming-events and at the door.  Co-sponsored by FFCPC, Finlandia Foundation National, Nordic Northwest, and Suomi-Seura/Finland Society. Ticket price: $17 for members of the sponsoring organizations, $22 for non-members.
